If you’re thinking about visiting the Miami Design District to eat shop and be merry this winter, let my good friend Karen Quinones, owner of En Avance Boutique, be your guide. En Avance, which, besides being the first independent fashion retailer in the design district, is also the longest standing Latina-owned indie luxury boutique in Miami.
Karen was one of the first retailers to abandon South Beach and move into what is now her hometown’s premier destination for public art, sophisticated eateries, and, of course, world-class shopping. That was almost 12 years ago and it’s no surprise then that En Avance showcases the hottest new global designers before anyone else. WOTF clocked in with Karen for her En Avance edit of what to wear and where to go when visiting Miami’s design district.
Walking in Miami’s Design District is like Walking on Sunshine. From sunup till sundown this silk and cotton lounging set from Majestic looks fab and feels right from poolside to a chic lunch then on to dinner and cocktails. Nothing is better for sunny days than a bag that’s as carefree as a beach bag and as chic as a Birkin. This roomy tote stocked at En Avance.
Relax. Keep it simple and chic.
All you need is a hand embroidered Anjuna caftan and a pair of sunglasses can get you through the entire weekend. What’s most important is that beautiful linen cover-up made by keeps you cool but it’s not transparent. Unstructured straw bags, like this mini-shopper from NMH, either worn at the shoulder or dangling from your wrist is elegant and not to mention, destined to become an instant wardrobe classic.
Sizzle Baby Sizzle
LOVE this dress by RetroFete. Simple as a t-shirt. Hot as fire. Slip it on an slay. Wild and free is the mood for Miami days and nights this Mandolin python box bag by Ximena Kavalekas holds a phone a wallet blush, some lipstick and maybe even a bikini.
Ossave’s Kimono makes a cool companion to just about anything you want to wear from easy jeans to elegant slip dress like this one from the cool girl cognoscenti label Protagonist. Notice slit bell-shaped sleeves, a detail you’ll be seeing a lot more of in fashion for seasons to come. Don’t sleep on the fact that what makes this kimono-style jacket all the more special is that has 44 hours of hand embroidery adorning the belt shoulders and sleeves.
Maison Francis Kurkdjian The fashion world is intoxicated with this new French fragrance brand that’s opened a shop in shop outpost of their Paris store nestled inside right inside the En Avance boutique. My favorite of these exquisitely handcrafted perfumes is Lumiere Noire ( translation “Black Light”). According to the perfumers and co-founders behind this unique fragrance house when we spoke at the grand opening of their new American outpost at EnAvance: “We think of fragrance as a wardrobe, like invisible garments that can be played with the express the multiple lifestyles of women.”
